Disney: The Magic of Animation—A Magical Journey in Wellington
For the first time ever, Disney: The Magic of Animation has arrived in New Zealand, and it’s making its exclusive stop in Wellington! This one-of-a-kind exhibition offers an enchanting peek behind the curtain at how some of Disney’s most beloved films came to life—from iconic classics to modern masterpieces.
Curated by Kristen McCormick, Art Exhibitions & Conservation Manager at the Walt Disney Animation Research Library, the exhibition showcases hand-selected works from a treasure trove of over 65 million items in the library’s collection. Visitors will journey through nearly a century of animation magic, seeing concept art, storyboards, and more from timeless films like Steamboat Willie (1928) and Fantasia (1940) to contemporary hits like Frozen (2013) and Raya and the Last Dragon (2021).
Adding to the excitement, the exhibition features artwork from Disney’s latest release, Moana 2. This inclusion makes Wellington one of the first places in the world to catch a glimpse of the artistry behind the new adventure of everyone’s favorite Polynesian heroine.
Interactive Magic for All Ages
This family-friendly exhibition goes beyond artwork. Interactive stations allow kids (and kids at heart) to try their hand at animation, practice coloring skills, or dress up in costumes inspired by beloved Disney characters. You can even waltz in Belle and the Beast’s ballroom or lose yourself in a mesmerizing projection of Alice’s endless fall into Wonderland.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Disney Magic
The exhibition also highlights the creative process of storytelling and character development. From initial sketches to fully realized scenes, guests can see how Disney artists bring their ideas to life. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering these films for the first time, this exhibition is a fascinating exploration of artistry and innovation.
A Must-See Experience
Disney: The Magic of Animation is more than just an exhibition—it’s a celebration of imagination and creativity. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to explore the world of Disney through the eyes of the artists and filmmakers who make it all possible.
