Honoring Edward Koren: “See Anyone You Know?” Exhibition at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum
The late cartoonist Edward Koren, best known for his prolific work with The New Yorker, is being celebrated in a special exhibition at Ohio State University’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. Titled “See Anyone You Know? The New Yorker Cartoons and Covers of Edward Koren”, the retrospective showcases over five decades of Koren’s career and will remain open to visitors until May 4.
The exhibition offers a journey through Koren’s artistic evolution, from his early works in the 1960s to his final pieces before his passing in April 2023. Curator Jenny Robb explained that Koren donated a significant portion of his work to the museum years ago, and the exhibition was purposefully scheduled to coincide with The New Yorker’s 100th anniversary.
Exploring Humor and Humanity Through Art
Edward Koren’s work captures the humor and depth of human nature with his distinctive “scratchy line” style. Known for his portrayals of quirky humans, animals, and whimsical creatures, Koren’s art reflects his deep affection for his subjects and his readers. Jenny Robb described the exhibition as a heartfelt celebration of Koren’s legacy:
“His instantly recognizable, scratchy line work is on display in his depictions of humans, animals, and indeterminate, but charming, creatures. His fondness for his characters and his readers shines through the cartoons on display.”
Koren’s personal friend and exhibition co-curator James Sturm shared how Koren’s art was rooted in his sharp wit and profound observations of human behavior:
“He was a very astute observer of how people connected, missed one another, or failed to connect. He would poke at hypocrisies in gentle ways. There’s a warm and gentle spirit in his work that reflects his personality.”
What to Expect at the Exhibition
The exhibit highlights Koren’s vast portfolio, including his New Yorker cartoons and covers, as well as lesser-known projects such as children’s books and community-driven works. Visitors will experience Koren’s unique ability to balance humor with keen insights into the quirks of human behavior.
Through his art, Koren captured the complexities of humanity while showcasing his love for people and his belief in their potential for connection.
The “See Anyone You Know?” exhibition is a testament to Edward Koren’s enduring legacy as one of the most beloved cartoonists of his time.
