The creative world is shifting, and the Next Gen Design Open Call 2026 is calling for the next wave of visionaries to lead the charge. Under the powerful theme “Futures Worth Living,” this international competition invites young designers, thinkers, and innovators across Europe to redefine our relationship with technology, nature, and each other.

What is Next Gen Design 2026?

Supported by the European Commission’s Creative Europe Programme, Next Gen Design is more than just a contest; it is a three-year movement connecting five major design festivals: Mikser Festival (Belgrade), What Design Can Do (Amsterdam), Vienna Design Week, Barcelona Design Week, and Skopje Design Week.

Who Should Apply?

If you are between 18 and 35 years old and live, study, or were born in Europe, this is your platform. Whether you work individually or in a team, you can submit up to five entries that showcase humanistic innovation, circular economy, or ethical AI applications.

Competition Themes & Categories

The 2026 edition focuses on design that heals divides and regenerates ecosystems. Key areas include:

  • Circular & Regenerative Systems: Low-impact furniture, tools, and interior elements.
  • Ethical Technology & AI: Human-centered applications of algorithms and automation.
  • Design for Care & Inclusion: Solutions for mental health, wellbeing, and community aid.
  • Sustainable Fashion & Textiles: Ethical production and repair culture.
  • Nature-Integrated Design: Biophilic systems and biodiversity-supporting projects.

The Rewards: Why You Should Enter

Winning the Next Gen Design Open Call 2026 opens doors to elite European design circles:

  1. Traveling Exhibition: 50 selected works will tour Europe from May to November 2026, showcased at major design weeks.
  2. Residency Program: 10 winners will participate in a 4-5 day intensive design sprint in a partner city (travel and accommodation covered up to €400 for travel and €100/day for expenses).
  3. Monetary Prizes: A total prize fund of €2,000 per festival will be awarded, with a first prize of €1,000 for the top residency projects.
  4. Digital Showcase: Permanent visibility on the Next Gen Design digital platform.
