The Master of the Pitch: Barrie Mitchell Retrospective Coming to Monkton Arts

The British comic book world is buzzing with excitement as Monkton Arts in Ryde, Isle of Wight, announces an upcoming exhibition dedicated to the legendary Barrie Mitchell. Known for his dynamic work on Roy of the Rovers and Look-in, Mitchell’s career spans five decades of artistic excellence.

A 50-Year Artistic Journey (1961–2011) The exhibition, titled “Comic Cutz,” provides a chronological journey through Mitchell’s professional life. From his early days at Bunty in 1961 to his later works in 2011, the showcase highlights the evolution of a master illustrator who defined the visual language of British sports and adventure comics.

What to Expect at the Exhibition:

  • Original Comic Plates: Iconic artwork from Roy of the Rovers, 2000AD, Action, and Scoop.
  • Pop Culture Icons: Illustrations from the famous Look-in magazine and Doctor Who (including the Age of Chaos story).
  • Beyond Comics: Special artworks created for the Channel 4 documentary South of Watford and his more recent automotive illustrations.
