The 2026 International Editorial Cartoon Competition: “Times Are Tough”
The 26th World Press Freedom Canada International Editorial Cartoon Competition is officially open for 2026. This year’s theme, “Times Are Tough,” strikes a heavy chord, focusing on the global erosion of democracy, the intimidation of journalists, and the shifting political landscape under leaders who challenge constitutional limits.
The Theme: A World Under Pressure
The competition highlights a critical moment in history. With the return of Donald Trump to power, the brief emphasizes concerns over the “war on science,” the targeting of journalists, and a general waning of democratic norms. It asks cartoonists to capture the feeling of a world “waiting for the next outrage” or the next person to fix a breaking system.
Competition Details & Prizes
If you are an editorial cartoonist with a sharp pen and a message, here is what you need to know:
- First Prize: $1500 CAD + Certificate from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
- Second Prize: $1000 CAD.
- Third Prize: $500 CAD.
- Awards of Excellence: 10 non-remunerated recognitions.
Key Rules for Entry
- Submission Limit: Only one (1) cartoon per participant.
- Originality: Must not have won a previous award.
- Format: Can be in color or black and white.
- Deadline: Friday, April 3, 2026 (Midnight EDST).
