The Legacy of a Creative Soul: Remembering Cartoonist Dan Moynihan (1981–2025)

The global cartooning community is mourning the sudden loss of Dan Moynihan, a brilliant Boston-based illustrator, author, and educator who passed away unexpectedly on December 21, 2025. Dan was a storyteller who specialized in finding the extraordinary within the ordinary, leaving behind a body of work that radiates kindness, curiosity, and pure joy.

A Journey from Textbooks to Martian Friendships

Dan’s career began in 2003, showcasing his incredible versatility. While he started in the technical world of medical and physics textbooks for Dartmouth Publishing, his heart belonged to the whimsical world of indie comics and children’s literature.

He was the creative force behind Mark & Zark, a heartwarming webcomic about an intergalactic friendship, and a frequent contributor to the iconic Nickelodeon Magazine. His work wasn’t just about drawing; it was about building worlds where “more possibilities exist than seem obvious.”

“Don’t Think. Just Draw.” — A Philosophy for Every Artist

Dan wasn’t just a creator; he was a mentor. His 2017 essay for Storystorm remains a manifesto for artists struggling with perfectionism. He famously urged creators to:

“Just draw, just write, just create. There’s no preparation of ideas, and no plan once we start, but we somehow create amazing stories together.”

This “action-first” mentality made him a beloved figure at the Brookline Adult and Community Education, where he taught both kids and adults that art is a journey of discovery, not a destination of perfection.

Award-Winning Works

His picture book, Hiding Dinosaurs (Holiday House, 2015), remains a staple in children’s libraries. It was honored as a “Must Read Picture Book” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book, celebrated for its exuberant illustrations and “rib-tickling” humor.

How You Can Help: Support for Ben and Cathy

Dan was the primary provider for his family and a doting father to his 14-month-old son, Ben. To help his wife, ceramicist Cathy Moynihan, manage the financial burden of this sudden tragedy, a memorial fund has been established.
