19 Caricaturists Celebrate Francisco Umbral in “Umbral, trazo a trazo” Exhibition in Spain

The exhibition “Umbral, trazo a trazo”, dedicated to the memory of renowned Spanish writer and journalist Francisco Umbral, has opened its doors in Spain as one of the country’s notable cultural and artistic events. Organized by the Institute of Leon Culture (ILC), the exhibition brings together literature, caricature, and illustration in a remarkable visual tribute.

Held at the Sala Polivalente of the Edificio Fierro in León, the exhibition features works by 19 illustrators and caricaturists from Spain and Hispano-America. Through different artistic styles and interpretations, the participating artists revisit the literary universe, intellectual legacy, and cultural influence of Francisco Umbral.

Among the featured artists are prominent names such as Antonio Mingote, Máximo, Fernando Vicente, Ricardo, and Toño Benavides. Their illustrations and caricatures offer visitors a fresh and expressive perspective on Umbral’s literary and cultural world.

The opening ceremony was attended by several distinguished cultural and official figures, including Gerardo Álvarez Courel, Emilio Martínez, Luis García, Fanny Rubio Gámez, Manuel Llorente Machado, and Aurelio Fernández Lozano. Participants highlighted the exhibition’s importance as a meaningful meeting point between literature and visual art.

Open to the public free of charge until June 14, “Umbral, trazo a trazo” stands out as a powerful artistic homage that revives the image, thought, and literary influence of Francisco Umbral through the language of drawing and caricature. The exhibition offers visitors an inspiring encounter between literature and visual storytelling.
