International Cartoon Exhibition on Environmental Protection Opens at Cluj International Airport

Cluj International Airport is hosting an International Cartoon Exhibition dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable aviation, offering passengers a creative perspective on one of today’s most pressing global challenges. The exhibition is organized within the framework of the European research project OLGA – hOListic Green Airports and is open to the public from July 2 to July 13, 2026, in the airport’s Arrivals Terminal.

The exhibition features 72 cartoons created by 12 cartoonists from eight countries: Italy, France, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Brazil, Poland, and Morocco. Through humor and visual storytelling, the artists address themes such as climate change, environmental conservation, renewable energy, and humanity’s collective responsibility for a greener future.

The initiative was conceived by Romanian cartoonist Radu Iatcu (IATZCO), with the artworks displayed in an innovative exhibition space illuminated by intelligent lighting systems developed and tested as part of the OLGA project. The exhibition demonstrates how technology and art can work together to communicate powerful sustainability messages.

Although aviation accounts for approximately 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions, the industry has committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. As part of this transition, Cluj International Airport has invested in electric ground equipment, energy efficiency projects, and renewable energy solutions, including a photovoltaic park currently under development.

The airport has also achieved Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), recognizing its continuous efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and align with European decarbonization objectives.

The OLGA – hOListic Green Airports project brings together 41 European partners, including airports, airlines, universities, research institutes, public authorities, and innovative companies working to develop the next generation of smarter, more energy-efficient, and lower-carbon airports. Major consortium members include Groupe ADP (Paris Airports), SEA Milan Airports, and Zagreb Airport.

According to the organizers, the exhibition reflects the philosophy that sustainability is not only about technological innovation but also about engaging the public through culture and creativity. By using cartoons, complex environmental issues become more accessible and memorable for travelers of all ages.
