Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 Opens for Entries with New Immersive and Vertical Film Categories
The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027, established by Creo and sponsored by Sony, has officially opened for entries, inviting filmmakers from around the world to submit their short films free of charge. Now in its fifth edition, the international program continues to support emerging talent by combining prestigious awards with an exclusive professional development experience at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles.
Designed to celebrate the future of cinematic storytelling, the competition welcomes filmmakers working across traditional and emerging formats, while providing direct access to leading professionals in the global film industry.
Six Categories for 2027
The 2027 edition features six competition categories:
- Fiction
- Non-Fiction
- Animation
- Immersive (new for 2027, presented by Meta)
- Student
- Future Format (dedicated to vertical 9:16 storytelling)
One of the most significant additions this year is the Immersive category, recognizing creators working with experiential and immersive filmmaking technologies. Meanwhile, the Future Format category continues to encourage filmmakers to explore storytelling specifically designed for vertical mobile viewing, reflecting the growing importance of smartphone-first content.
Exclusive Industry Program in Los Angeles
Shortlisted filmmakers will be invited to participate in an exclusive four-day industry program held at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles.
Participants will receive:
- Return flights and hotel accommodation
- Workshops and masterclasses led by Sony Pictures executives
- Panel discussions, screenings and technical demonstrations
- Studio tours and Q&A sessions
- Networking opportunities with filmmakers and industry professionals
- Attendance at the official red-carpet awards ceremony
The program is designed to provide both creative inspiration and practical industry knowledge, helping emerging filmmakers build long-term careers.
Significant Awards and Professional Opportunities
Category winners receive a combination of cash prizes, professional filmmaking equipment and international recognition.
Among the major awards:
- Fiction, Non-Fiction and Animation winners each receive US$5,000, Sony camera and lens equipment, and a Meta VR device.
- The Immersive winner receives US$5,000 and a Meta VR device.
- The Student winner receives Sony camera equipment and a Meta VR device, while the winner’s educational institution also receives Sony camera equipment.
- The Future Format winner receives US$2,500 together with Sony camera equipment.
In addition, the Sustainability Prize awards US$5,000, Sony digital imaging equipment and promotional support to a film highlighting sustainability themes.
New Snapdragon Shorts Award
Another major addition for 2027 is the Snapdragon Shorts Award.
Five filmmakers selected from the official shortlist will receive Snapdragon-powered filmmaking devices, including a smartphone and laptop, to produce a brand-new short film.
The overall winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii, where the film will premiere during the Snapdragon Summit, while also gaining international exposure through the Snapdragon Insiders community.
Eligibility
The competition is open to filmmakers worldwide.
Applicants may submit one completed film per category, provided each film:
- was completed between 1 January 2025 and 15 December 2026
- has all necessary rights cleared
- includes English subtitles for significant non-English dialogue
- fully discloses any AI-assisted production
- has not been previously submitted unless substantially re-edited
The Student category is reserved for current higher-education film students or graduates from 2026.
Filmmakers under 18 may also participate with parental or guardian consent.
Free Entry Until December 15
Unlike many international film competitions, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards remain completely free to enter across all categories.
With international exposure, industry mentorship, valuable networking opportunities and professional filmmaking prizes, the program continues to establish itself as one of the world’s leading platforms for emerging filmmakers.
The submission deadline for all categories is 15 December 2026.
