The SPIE International Day of Light Photo Contest 2026 is now accepting submissions from photographers around the world. Organized by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, the competition celebrates the International Day of Light by encouraging photographers to explore the impact of light on our lives, communities, nature, science, and technology. The contest is free to enter and welcomes both amateur and professional photographers aged 18 and over.
The competition invites original photographs that demonstrate how light influences everyday life, scientific discovery, cultural experiences, environmental phenomena, and technological innovation. Rather than focusing solely on visual beauty, entries are expected to communicate meaningful stories that highlight the importance of light in today’s world.
Each participant may submit up to two photographs. Images will be evaluated on artistic quality, creativity, scientific relevance, technical execution, and their ability to effectively communicate the contest theme. Limited post-processing is permitted, but photographs generated or significantly altered using artificial intelligence are not accepted under the official rules.
Beyond cash awards, the contest offers photographers international visibility through SPIE publications, exhibitions, conferences, and online platforms, making it an excellent opportunity to present meaningful visual storytelling to a global audience.
