Ten Years After His Death, New Exhibitions Revisit the Work of Siné
A multi-site programme in southern France brings together political drawings, cats, jazz, cinema work and other parts of the French cartoonist’s long career.
Ten years after the death of French cartoonist Siné, his work is being shown across several venues in southern France. The programme ranges from political drawings and his familiar cats to jazz, graphic work and material connected with cinema.
The latest part opened on September 12 at Galerie L’Embarcadère in Lisle-sur-Tarn. Titled Siné — Le crayon entre les dents, the exhibition continues until November 1 and forms part of a wider multi-site programme organised in connection with FIFIGROT 2026.
According to the exhibition organisers, the Lisle-sur-Tarn selection reflects several sides of Siné’s work, including his cats, his interest in jazz, graphic creations, cinema posters, political cartoons and a group of drawings devoted to wine.

Siné at the cinema
The Toulouse programme also focuses on Siné’s work for cinema. From September 14 to 20, Cinéma ABC will show film posters drawn by Siné together with press books and other objects connected with the cinema.
The material comes from the archives of the Cinémathèque de Toulouse. FIFIGROT also lists press books, invitations and flyers among the items included in the exhibition.
An opening reception at Cinéma ABC is scheduled for September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the presence of Catherine Siné. Entry to the exhibition is free during the cinema’s opening hours.
More than sixty years of drawing
Maurice Sinet, better known as Siné, worked as a cartoonist, caricaturist, poster artist and publisher. The L’Embarcadère exhibition traces a career that stretched over more than sixty years and included work for L’Express, Siné Massacre, L’Enragé, Hara-Kiri, Charlie Hebdo, Siné Hebdo and Siné Mensuel.
Politics remained a central part of that career. The exhibition material describes Siné as an anticolonialist during the Algerian War and as a cartoonist consistently hostile to political and religious authority. FIFIGROT, in its own introduction to the programme, also highlights his antimilitarism, pacifism and anticolonialism.
The anniversary programme does not concentrate on one period of Siné’s career. Its different venues instead separate out several areas of his work, from political cartooning to cinema posters and graphic material.
Ten years after Siné’s death
Siné died in 2016. FIFIGROT says the tenth anniversary of his death provided the occasion for this year’s tribute. The cartoonist had crossed paths with the festival and what it calls the “Groland spirit” on a number of occasions.
The Toulouse parts of the programme open on September 14, when FIFIGROT begins, and continue until September 20. The Lisle-sur-Tarn exhibition has a longer run and remains open until November 1.
