Environment, Migration, Technology: Addressing Global Issues Through Cartoon Art
Cartoons are more than just humorous illustrations; they are a powerful medium for critique, social awareness, and change. Angel Boligan, a globally recognized cartoonist, masterfully addresses pressing issues such as environmental crises, migration, and the impact of technology on modern life through his sharp artistic lens.
Angel Boligan and the Global Cartoon Scene
Born in Cuba in 1965, Boligan initially worked as a plastic arts instructor in Havana before moving to Mexico in 1992, where he became a leading cartoonist for El Universal. His works have appeared in numerous international publications, including La Nación (Argentina). With over 212 awards and recognitions, he is regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists of our time.

Currently, the Indian Cartoon Gallery (ICG) in Bengaluru is showcasing around 60 of Boligan’s best works, covering themes such as:
- Environmental destruction – Climate change and resource depletion
- Migration and refugees – The struggles of displaced people
- Technology and modern life – The double-edged nature of digitalization
- Social critiques – Family, individualism, and globalization
According to VG Narendra, the Managing Trustee of ICG, Boligan’s works often speak for themselves, requiring no captions to convey their powerful messages.
Boligan’s Awards and Recognitions
Throughout his career, Boligan has received the National Journalism Prize of Mexico three times (2009, 2013, and 2019). Other notable accolades include:
- La Catrina Award (2016) – One of Latin America’s most prestigious honors for graphic humor
- GDA Journalism Award (2013) – For his editorial cartoons in El Universal
- Inter-American Press Society (SIP) Award (2023) – Recognized for his impactful work in El Universal
The Role of Cartoons in Social Change
ICG has previously organized exhibitions for International Women’s Day and events under the theme “Cartoons for Social Change.” The gallery has featured both Indian and international artists, including Marco De Angelis (Italy) and Klaus Pitter (Austria).
As Boligan’s exhibition continues to draw crowds, his work underscores the power of art to challenge perspectives, inspire action, and drive social change.
