Remembering Azmi Hussin: The Legacy of a Penang Cartoonist
Renowned Penang cartoonist Mohd Azmi Mohd Hussin, popularly known as Azmi Hussin, passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 40. His sudden demise has left the Malaysian art and cartooning community in mourning.
Azmi Hussin’s Artistic Journey
Azmi began his artistic career as a street caricature artist in 2013 and quickly became a household name in Malaysia. Over the years, he made significant contributions to the art scene, particularly in mural art, comics, and cartoons.
His first English cartoon book, “Tanjong Life”, was published in 2015 and launched by his idol, the legendary Malaysian cartoonist Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid (Lat). Azmi’s 2016 comic book, “The Little Mamak,” was recognized as one of Malaysia’s Top 50 books and represented the country at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
A Record-Breaking Cartoonist
Azmi Hussin holds three Malaysia Book of Records titles, two of which are also listed in the Asia Book of Records. He was known for his ambitious projects and was even working towards breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cartoon strip.
A Legacy in Art and Culture
Azmi’s influence extended beyond Malaysia. He played a key role in promoting Penang’s local art and tourism on the global stage, with his works featured in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. His contributions to Penang’s street murals and creative economy were widely recognized, with Tourism Malaysia’s Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin expressing deep condolences for his passing.
