An event that introduces the Flemish Canon through comics: De Nacht van de Geschiedenis

An event that aims to introduce the Flemish Canon, a list of important elements of Flemish culture and history, through comics, will take place on November 11, 2023 at the European Cartoon Center in Kruishoutem. The name of the event is De Nacht van de Geschiedenis: De Vlaamse Canon verbeeld, which means The Night of History: The Flemish Canon Visualized.

The speaker of the event is Professor Jan Cumps from the Catholic University of Leuven, who specializes in language teaching and comic book phenomenon. Cumps will explain the topics that are included in the sixty “windows” of the Flemish Canon, using comics as a medium. These topics include prominent people, events and works in the fields of Flemish art, literature, politics, science and sports.

The event was prepared by Cumps, who stated that the Flemish Canon is still an unknown area for many people. After the event, participants will be able to visit the cartoon exhibition at the European Cartoon Center and enjoy a drink.

The event is organized by Davidsfonds Kruisem, a civil society organization that organizes various events to promote Flemish culture and history. The participation fee for the event is 10 euros (7 euros for Davidsfonds members), while participants under 23 can enter for free.
