IIC Marks Milestone with 200th Cartoon Exhibition and Release of CartoonistsIndia Annual 2024
Bengaluru – The Indian Institute of Cartoonists (IIC) celebrated a significant achievement at the Indian Cartoon Gallery, hosting its 200th Cartoon Exhibition alongside the launch of the CartoonistsIndia Annual 2024, the third edition of its flagship publication.
The event featured a panel discussion on “The Future of Cartooning in the Digital Era,” attracting a diverse audience of cartoonists, art enthusiasts, and the general public.
A Tribute to Icons of Cartooning
The exhibition paid homage to the legendary M.S. Ramakrishna, whose timeless works have graced the pages of Shankar’s Weekly, Caravan, and Woman’s Era. Highlights included:
- Hubby, a celebrated full-page colour cartoon series featured in Caravan from 1976 for over a decade.
- Rajita, a popular series in Woman’s Era during the 1980s.
Ms. Sunita Munagapati, daughter of the late M.S. Ramakrishna, shared touching anecdotes about her father’s creative legacy, shedding light on his enduring impact on Indian cartooning.
CartoonistsIndia Annual 2024
The 100+ page annual publication celebrates both Indian and international cartooning, offering:
- Tributes to iconic cartoonists such as Abu Abraham, Ahibhushan Malik, Gopulu, Kerala Verma, André Franquin, Harvey Kurtzman, and Jack Davis.
- A special feature on the history of cartooning in Jammu and Kashmir, showcasing its unique style and cultural richness.
This edition serves as a vibrant testament to the art form’s enduring legacy and relevance in contemporary times.
Distinguished Guests and Panel Discussion
The event was graced by Chief Guest Dr. (Prof.) Mrinal Chatterjee, Regional Director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Odisha, along with Guests of Honour Amarnath Kamath, Trustee of the Maya Kamath Memorial Awards, and Ms. Sunita Munagapati.
A lively panel discussion moderated by G.S. Krishnan, Cartoon Analyst, featured:
