The Voice of Justice: Joe Sacco Calls for Accountability Over Gaza Genocide

Renowned Maltese-American cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco has raised his voice in a striking condemnation of the ongoing violence in Gaza. Sacco has called for an international arrest warrant to be issued for US President Joe Biden, accusing him of complicity in what he describes as a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Speaking to Haaretz, Sacco said, “What is happening in Gaza is a genocide, a crime against humanity in which the United States is also involved, because it provides Israel with military and diplomatic cover, and participates in the daily killing through weapons manufactured in [the US].” Sacco also emphasized that Biden should be tried alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for their roles in the atrocities.

The Haaretz editorial team, focusing extensively on the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza, painted a grim picture of the crisis. “The callousness and hardness of heart are not limited to the Israeli government only but rather characterize broad circles of Israelis who try to ignore the bleeding of the Gazans in various ways,” the publication remarked.

As the conflict drags on into the harsh winter months, the toll on innocent lives grows heavier. The destruction in Gaza, particularly in the north, has left tens of thousands dead, injured, or displaced. Among the most vulnerable are children, who are increasingly succumbing to cold and deprivation as humanitarian aid struggles to reach those in desperate need.

The Humanitarian Cost

The recent Israeli airstrike on the Kemal Advan Hospital in Beit Lahia stands as a stark reminder of the escalating crisis. Images of Palestinians combing through the rubble for survivors highlight the catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure.

In its editorial titled “Israelis’ Only Wish for 2025 Should Be the End of the War and the Return of the Hostages,” Haaretz urged for immediate cessation of hostilities. It warned that Netanyahu’s lack of interest in peace negotiations is abandoning the over 100 Israelis kidnapped in Gaza, leaving them as pawns in a broader political game.

The publication called for Israelis to reflect deeply on their priorities, stressing that the end of war and the restoration of peace should be the primary focus for the coming year.

Global Responsibility

Sacco’s bold statements remind the international community of its moral obligations. While global leaders have debated the complexities of the conflict, civilians—on both sides—continue to pay the ultimate price. Sacco’s plea for accountability resonates with many who see the need for justice and a lasting resolution.

As 2025 begins, the question remains: Will the world finally act to end the suffering in Gaza, or will another year of violence, death, and despair pass unchallenged?
