Gabrovo: The Global Capital of Humor and the Legendary House of Humor and Satire
Content:
If there is one city that has built its entire identity on a punchline, it is Gabrovo, Bulgaria. Known worldwide as the “Capital of Humor,” Gabrovo is home to a unique institution that every satire lover and cartoonist must visit: The House of Humor and Satire.
Established in 1972 on April Fool’s Day, this museum operates under the immortal motto: “The world has lasted because it has laughed.”
1. The Museum: A Treasure Trove of Satire
The House of Humor and Satire isn’t just a gallery; it’s a massive archive of human wit. Spanning four floors, it houses over 38,000 works of art, including cartoons, satirical paintings, and sculptures from artists across the globe.
- Why Visit: It’s one of the few places on Earth where caricature is treated with the same prestige as classical fine art. The permanent exhibitions explore everything from local Gabrovo folklore to sharp political satire.
- Feridun’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
2. The International Biennial of Humor and Satire
If you can, time your visit for the International Biennial. This event brings together the world’s best cartoonists. As a cartoonist myself, I find the diversity of visual metaphors here to be a masterclass in storytelling.
3. The “Thrifty” Gabrovians
The city’s humor is rooted in the legendary “thriftiness” of its citizens. You’ll see statues of cats with cut-off tails—the joke being that Gabrovians do this so the door closes faster and the heat stays in! This dry, intelligent wit is reflected in every corner of the museum.
- Location: 68 Bryanska St, 5300 Gabrovo, Bulgaria
