Stane Jagodič, a cornerstone of Slovenian and Central Eastern European neo-avant-garde art, is being celebrated with a profound retrospective at the Künstlerhaus Vienna, titled “Metamorphosis of the Mind.”
The exhibition officially opened on the evening of April 16, marking a significant moment for the regional art scene. The ceremony featured opening remarks by Tanja Prušnik, President of the Künstlerhaus Association, and a curatorial presentation by Dejan Sluga. The event was highlighted by a special musical intervention from the jazz duo Borna Pehar and Nikolaus Holler, blending the visual complexity of the art with auditory experimentation.
Redefining the Photographic Medium
Since the 1970s, Jagodič has been a pioneer in pushing the boundaries of photography. His approach is defined by an exceptional experimentalism where he merges:
- Traditional Photography: Captured with a keen eye for form.
- Found Materials & X-Rays: Creating multi-layered narratives.
- Linguistics: Using words as graphic and conceptual tools.
By integrating performance into his photographic practice, Jagodič transformed the medium into a multidisciplinary tool, becoming a pioneer of abstract photography in the process.
Socio-Political Critique through Surrealism
Jagodič’s photomontages are not mere aesthetic experiments; they are powerful critiques of contemporary technology, industry, and the subsequent dehumanization of everyday life. By employing elements of the absurd, the grotesque, and biting irony, he bridges the legacy of early 20th-century Dadaism and Surrealism with the urgent dialogues of today’s neo-avant-garde movements.
