Banksy’s New Sculpture in Central London: A Message of “Blind Patriotism” at Waterloo Place

The world-renowned street artist Banksy has made headlines once again, this time not with a mural, but with a massive sculpture placed in one of London’s most prestigious squares. Appearing suddenly at Waterloo Place, the artwork—often referred to as “Blind Patriotism”—critiques modern politics and rising nationalism under the shadow of imperialism.

The mysterious street artist Banksy has surprised fans and the art world yet again. The new sculpture was discovered at dawn on Wednesday at Waterloo Place in central London. Banksy officially confirmed the work as his own on Thursday afternoon by sharing a video on his Instagram account.

A Figure Blinded by His Own Flag

The sculpture depicts a man in a sharp suit carrying a large flag. However, the flag, appearing to flutter in the wind, completely covers the man’s face. Despite this “loss of vision,” the figure takes a confident step forward off the edge of the pedestal. Experts and art enthusiasts suggest the piece serves as a powerful metaphor for “leaders who cannot see what is ahead” or “societies that have lost touch with reality through extreme nationalism.”

The Choice of Location is No Coincidence

The placement of the artwork is one of the most significant elements supporting Banksy’s critical narrative. Waterloo Place is home to monuments honoring Britain’s military and imperial past, including statues of Edward VII, Florence Nightingale, and the Crimean War Memorial. Standing among these historical giants, Banksy’s “suited man” highlights the irony between Britain’s past and its present as he steps into the void.

Comments from the Art World: “A Magnificent Move”

James Peak, creator of “The Banksy Story” podcast series for the BBC, evaluated the work with these words:

“There’s a magnificent commentary here on a swaggering, boastful person of power; the flag in his hand has completely obscured his vision, and he’s about to step off the plinth. Banksy has made another extraordinary move; the choice of location is absolutely phenomenal.”

Ollie Isaac, a 23-year-old student who came to see the sculpture, remarked: “The suit just screams ‘I’m a politician.’ It’s a great response to the resurgence of nationalism.”

How It Was Installed Remains a Mystery

How such a large sculpture was erected without detection in one of London’s most heavily monitored areas, very close to Buckingham Palace, remains a subject of great curiosity. In the Instagram video shared by Banksy, the operation is shown to have been carried out with great secrecy in the middle of the night.

Westminster Council stated that the sculpture makes a “striking contribution to the city’s vibrant public art scene” and announced that they would keep the work accessible for the public to enjoy for now, having placed security barriers around it for protection.
