Tribute Exhibition Honors the Legacy of José Palomo in Mexico City

A special exhibition celebrating the life and work of renowned Chilean-Mexican cartoonist and illustrator José “Palomo” Fuentes will open this week in Mexico City.

Cartoonists, illustrators, journalists, and admirers of Palomo’s work will gather on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to commemorate the beloved artist, who passed away in March 2026. The event will also mark the opening of the exhibition Palomo: Papel, tinta y memoria (Palomo: Paper, Ink and Memory), a tribute to his remarkable artistic legacy.

Remembered for his sharp wit, elegant linework, and insightful social commentary, Palomo left a lasting impact on the world of editorial cartooning and illustration throughout Latin America.

Speaking about his longtime friend, Mexican cartoonist Arturo Kemchs described Palomo as:

“A comedic genius with a unique sensibility. He achieved a truly singular interconnection between his way of interpreting life—expressed through a line style that, on the surface, appeared simple and charming—and the profound message that lay hidden beneath.”

Throughout his career, Palomo developed a distinctive visual language that combined humor, humanity, and critical observation. His cartoons often addressed social and political issues while maintaining an accessible and deeply personal artistic voice.

The exhibition will be hosted at the Ubs Business School of the University of Business Development and Pedagogical (UNIVDEP) in Mexico City. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a collection of original works that highlight the breadth of Palomo’s creativity and his enduring influence on contemporary cartooning.

More than an exhibition, Palomo: Paper, Ink and Memory serves as a celebration of an artist whose drawings continue to inspire cartoonists and readers alike, preserving his legacy through the universal language of humor and illustration.
