Bone Creator Jeff Smith Receives the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award

One of the most beloved and influential creators in modern comics, Jeff Smith, has been selected to receive the prestigious Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonists Society (NCS). The honor recognizes Smith’s extraordinary contributions to the art of cartooning and graphic storytelling over a career spanning decades.

The award will be presented during the 80th Annual Reuben Awards and NCS Conference, taking place from August 6–8, 2026. Making the occasion even more special, the ceremony will be held in Columbus, Ohio—the city where Smith grew up and where his legendary comic series Bone first began its journey.

A Masterpiece Readers Never Outgrow

Few graphic novels have achieved the lasting impact of Bone. Widely regarded as one of the greatest independent comics ever published, the series has captivated generations of readers with its unique blend of humor, adventure, and epic fantasy.

In her article Seven Books You’ll Never Outgrow, Atlantic writer Rafaela Jinich described her first encounter with the series:

“I found a graphic novel called Out From Boneville at a school book fair. On the cover was a cute white character that looked like a mix between Casper the Friendly Ghost and a Moomin. I had no idea I was about to embark on an incredible journey. Jeff Smith’s nine-book Bone series is a magnificent work of high fantasy disguised as children’s literature. And it is also incredibly funny.”

The series has long been praised for combining the charm of classic newspaper comics with the depth and scope of epic fantasy literature.

A Well-Deserved Honor

Cartoonist Ruben Bolling, creator of Tom the Dancing Bug, recently highlighted Smith’s enormous influence on the comics industry, noting that the creator’s contributions extend far beyond the pages of Bone.

Through his pioneering self-publishing efforts, Smith helped demonstrate that independent creators could successfully produce and distribute ambitious long-form graphic narratives. His work inspired countless artists and publishers who followed in his footsteps.

A Return to His Roots

For Jeff Smith, receiving the award in Columbus adds a deeply personal dimension to the recognition.

Growing up in Ohio, Smith developed his love of comics through classic newspaper strips and comic books, including Peanuts, Pogo, and Uncle Scrooge. Years later, he would launch Bone from the same city, creating a series that would become one of the defining graphic novels of its generation.

The award ceremony therefore represents not only a celebration of artistic achievement but also a symbolic return to the place where his creative journey began.

The Legacy of Bone

First published in 1991, Bone follows the adventures of three cousins—Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone—who are driven out of Boneville and find themselves in a mysterious valley filled with dragons, rat creatures, ancient prophecies, and powerful forces.

The series masterfully balances comedy, adventure, and high fantasy, making it accessible to younger readers while offering depth and sophistication appreciated by adults.

By the Numbers

  • Published in 33 countries
  • Winner of 11 Eisner Awards
  • Winner of 11 Harvey Awards
  • Recipient of 52 national and international awards
  • Millions of copies sold worldwide

The color editions released by Scholastic in 2005 introduced Bone to an entirely new generation of readers and helped pave the way for the explosive growth of the middle-grade graphic novel market seen today.

Beyond Bone

While Bone remains his most celebrated work, Jeff Smith has continued to explore new creative territory through projects such as the science-fiction thriller RASL and the prehistoric adventure series TUKI.

He is also widely respected as an advocate for creators’ rights and as a co-founder of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC), one of the most important festivals dedicated to comics and cartoon art.

With the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Cartoonists Society is recognizing not only the creator of one of the greatest graphic novels ever produced, but also a lifelong champion of the comics medium itself.

For fans around the world, the honor serves as a fitting tribute to a creator whose work continues to inspire readers, artists, and storytellers across generations.
