Half a Century of Humor Legacy: 50th National Cartoon Exhibition Catalog Published
The Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA) presented the 50th National Exhibition of Bulgarian Cartoon Art in Sofia this Wednesday—one of its oldest and most prestigious formats. To mark this historic milestone, a comprehensive digital catalog featuring selected works from across the country has been released.
The exhibition, held at the Union of Bulgarian Artists gallery at 6 Shipka Str., opened with an awards ceremony where the jury honored outstanding contributions. Key accolades presented included the Union of Bulgarian Artists Award, the Cartoon Section Award for overall contribution, and the Sofia Municipality Donyo Donev Award.
From Humor to Sharp Satire
As highlighted in the newly published catalog, the 50th edition showcases the vast expressive power of cartoon art. The works range from light-hearted humor inspired by the absurdities of daily life to sharp sarcasm that serves as a social verdict. The catalog features not only classical cartoons and portraits of well-known figures but also a variety of satirical works utilizing diverse techniques—from traditional drawing to digital graphics and painting.
The themes are remarkably diverse, with political satire and various global crises taking center stage as primary sources of inspiration. Additionally, works focusing on sports, social themes, and everyday life interpret serious issues in an accessible and provocative way. This special collection stands as a historical record of a genre that has visualized and challenged social norms for half a century.
