Into Battle: A Must-See War Comic Art Exhibition Lands in York
If you’re a fan of British comics, history, or both, then York is the place to be this season. The York Army Museum has just opened its doors to an exciting new exhibition, Into Battle: The Art of British War Comics, which will run until November 17, 2024.
Previously showcased at the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, this exhibition offers a deep dive into the rich history of British war comics. Fans of classic comic titles such as the War Picture Library and Battle Action—now owned by Rebellion Publishing—are in for a treat. These comics have been a staple of British storytelling for over 130 years, with war stories particularly dominating the genre in the 1960s and 1970s.
The exhibition unfolds the history of war comics decade by decade, featuring original comic artwork that’s being publicly displayed for the first time. Visitors can explore everything from satirical strips and patriotic stories of the 19th and early 20th centuries to the revolutionary, gritty comics of the 1970s, which presented much more authentic and emotionally charged narratives.

A Trip Down Memory Lane—and More
Long-time comic readers will enjoy a nostalgic trip back to some of their favorites, while newer fans will gain insight into how this beloved medium has evolved over the years. The exhibition draws on Rebellion’s extensive archives, showcasing spectacular covers and action-packed panels from the War Picture Library, Battle Picture Weekly, and Battle Action.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is Battle Action, a comic that Rebellion has recently revived. With contributions from renowned writers and artists like Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys), Keith Burns (Commando Comics, “Johnny Red”), and Dan Abnett (Warhammer 40k, Marvel Comics), Battle Action remains a fan favorite. The comic was originally known as Battle Picture Weekly before merging with Action in 1977. It notably featured the series Charley’s War by Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun, regarded as one of the greatest British war comics of all time.
Original Artwork on Display
Among the incredible artwork on display, you’ll find original 1983 Charley’s War panels by Mills and Colquhoun, alongside full-color artwork from Jordi Penalva (“Bulldog Breed”, 1965), Giorgio de Gaspari (“Spy 13 and the Phoney Invasion”, 1959), and Graham Cotton (“Gun Duel”, 1967).
The exhibition also includes:
- “Battle Drill” by Jordi Penalva (1965)
- “Gun Duel” by Graham Coton (1967)
- “Debt of Honour” by Alessandro Biffignandi (1961)
- “Pegasus Bridge” from Battle Picture Weekly No 2 (1975)
Beyond the nostalgia and historical value for adults, the exhibition offers younger visitors a chance to discover how comics are made and even try their hand at creating their own.

A Unique Experience in York
This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum and Rebellion, the Oxford-based publisher behind iconic comic series such as 2000AD, Roy of the Rovers, and Battle Action.
The York Army Museum itself is a marvel, created eight years ago thanks to a £900,000 National Lottery grant. The award-winning museum tells the story of the Yorkshire soldier from 1685 to the present day, housed in a beautifully redeveloped former Territorial drill hall. It’s designed to attract all ages with its versatile, accessible contemporary exhibition and events space, earning its designers, Studio MB, the exhibition category award at the Scottish Design Awards.
So, if you’re in York between now and mid-November, don’t miss out on Into Battle: The Art of British War Comics. It’s a unique opportunity to explore the powerful and enduring legacy of war comics in British culture.
