Democracy Under Siege: Ann Telnaes’ Award-Winning Documentary Makes Its U.S. Debut May 1st

Acclaimed editorial cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize winner Ann Telnaes offers a razor-sharp critique of American political hypocrisy in the highly anticipated documentary, “Democracy Under Siege.” Despite receiving enthusiastic receptions overseas, the film faced distribution hurdles in the U.S. In a bold move, Telnaes and her team have “gone rogue,” making the film available digitally starting May 1st.

A Global Perspective on American Crisis

Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Laura Nix, the film is the sixth and final installment in the award-winning “Draw for Change” series. This global project pairs female filmmakers with female cartoonists working under censorship, dictatorship, and restrictive societies.

The film has already garnered international acclaim, winning the 2025 RIAS Berlin Commission Media Award, with the commission calling it “A cinematic masterpiece that proves that satire and journalism can have an enormous impact together.”

Free Streaming for Four Days

The documentary will be available for free for a limited window from May 1–4, 2026.

Why You Should Watch

Packed with the innovative dark humor of Telnaes’ cartoons, the film examines how the promise of American multiracial democracy faces a renewed backlash. Key themes include:

  • Historical Roots: Connecting present-day crises like executive overreach and judicial ethics to deep-seated roots in American history.
  • Institutional Dysfunction: A detailed analysis of the “constitutional logjams” pushing democracy toward a precipice.
  • The Power of Satire: As Pressespiegel noted, Telnaes’s art provides a “touch of lightness” that does justice to the serious and dramatic dimensions of the subject.

Critical Acclaim

  • DOC NYC: “Nix has made a bombshell film that is the equivalent of smelling salts under the noses of an engaged global citizenry.”
  • Télé Cable: “A detailed analysis of the dysfunction of American institutions.”

World Press Freedom Day Event

On World Press Freedom Day, May 3rd, Ann Telnaes and Laura Nix will join satirist Andy Borowitz on his podcast to discuss the film and the vital role of free speech in preserving democratic ideals.
