World of Cartooning Mourns: Legendary Turkish Master Erdoğan Başol Passes Away at 90

The international cartoon community has lost one of its most prominent and enduring voices. Erdoğan Başol, the legendary Turkish cartoonist, award-winning master, and longtime executive of the Turkish Cartoonists Association, has passed away at the age of 90. He was laid to rest in Istanbul following an emotional funeral attended by his family, colleagues, and countless admirers from the world of art and satire.

Known for his poignant, wordless humor that transcended geographical and linguistic boundaries, Başol’s passing marks the end of an era for both Turkish satire and global graphic art.

From Istanbul to the World: A Lifelong Journey of Lines

Born in Istanbul in 1936, Erdoğan Başol discovered his passion for graphic satire at a very young age. His first cartoon was published in 1952 in the popular weekly magazine Hafta when he was just 16 years old. This initial spark ignited a brilliant, highly disciplined career that spanned more than seven decades.

Throughout the golden age of Turkish satire, Başol became a cornerstone contributor to iconic satirical magazines such as Akbaba, Dolmuş, Tef, Taş, and Zübük. His sharp intellect and elegant, non-aggressive yet deeply impactful style established him as a household name, capturing the social, political, and cultural evolution of his homeland.

A Global Master: Conquering the International Arena

What truly set Erdoğan Başol apart was his mastery of wordless cartooning. Recognizing early on that humor is a universal human trait, he stripped his work of text, allowing his clean lines, masterful compositions, and philosophical concepts to speak directly to global audiences.

This universal approach earned him immense acclaim on the international festival circuit. Over the decades, Başol became one of Turkey’s most respected cultural ambassadors, winning top prizes, medals, and honorable mentions at prestigious global competitions, including:

  • Italy — the world-renowned festivals of Marostica and Bordighera
  • Bulgaria — The House of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo
  • North Macedonia — The World Gallery of Cartoons in Skopje
  • Japan — The Yomiuri International Cartoon Contest

as well as major exhibitions and competitions in Belgium, Yugoslavia, Portugal, and many other countries.

In addition to competing, Başol frequently served as a respected international jury member, bringing his sharp eye and fair judgment to global contests, while also holding numerous solo exhibitions abroad.

A Pillar of the Artistic Community and Mentor to Youth

Beyond his drafting table, Başol was a passionate advocate for the institutional growth of cartooning. He dedicated years of service to the executive board of the Turkish Cartoonists Association, fighting for artists’ rights, freedom of expression, and the cultural prestige of graphic arts.

Perhaps his greatest legacy, however, was his dedication to younger generations. Başol frequently organized and judged national and international cartoon competitions for children and young adults, personally mentoring countless aspiring cartoonists and helping ensure that the torch of satire would safely pass to future generations.

Farewell to a Gentle Giant of Satire

At his funeral, colleagues, friends, and representatives from the cultural sector remembered Başol not only as a brilliant visual philosopher, but also as a humble, unifying, and endlessly kind human being.

In the wake of Erdoğan Başol’s passing, what remains are timeless lines that inspired generations and transcended borders through the universal language of cartooning.

May he rest in peace.
