Lucky Luke Turns 80: Giorgio Cavazzano and Marco Nucci Create a Brand-New Adventure for the Legendary Cowboy

One of the most enduring icons of European comics is celebrating a major milestone in 2026. Eighty years after his debut, Lucky Luke, the legendary cowboy created by Morris in 1946, will return in an all-new adventure produced by two of Italy’s most respected comic creators. Italian publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore has announced a special anniversary album illustrated by Giorgio Cavazzano and written by Marco Nucci, created as a tribute to the cowboy who “shoots faster than his shadow.”

The new graphic novel will make its world premiere during Lucca Comics & Games 2026, where visitors will be able to purchase the book before its wider release in bookstores and comic shops. More than simply another Lucky Luke story, the project celebrates eight decades of one of Europe’s most influential comic characters while bringing together the Franco-Belgian and Italian comic traditions in a unique collaboration.

Eighty Years of a Comic Legend

Lucky Luke first appeared in the pages of Spirou magazine in 1946, created by Belgian artist Morris. With his unmistakable silhouette, faithful horse Jolly Jumper, and the famous tagline “the man who shoots faster than his shadow,” the cowboy quickly became one of the defining figures of European comics.

The series reached new artistic heights after René Goscinny joined as writer in the 1950s. Together, Morris and Goscinny transformed Lucky Luke into much more than a Western adventure. Their stories blended humor, satire, and historical references while introducing unforgettable characters such as the Dalton Brothers, Calamity Jane, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Rantanplan.

Over the decades, Lucky Luke has been translated into dozens of languages, sold millions of copies worldwide, and inspired animated series, films, and countless generations of readers. Eighty years after his creation, the cowboy remains one of the most recognizable ambassadors of European comics.

An Italian Tribute to an International Icon

The anniversary project stands out not only because it celebrates Lucky Luke’s legacy, but also because of the creative team behind it.

Illustrations are entrusted to Giorgio Cavazzano, one of Italy’s greatest living comic artists. Internationally renowned for his Disney masterpieces as well as numerous original graphic works, Cavazzano’s dynamic storytelling and expressive line have influenced generations of artists. His interpretation of Lucky Luke is expected to become one of the most anticipated comic releases of the year.

The story is written by Marco Nucci, whose recent work for both Sergio Bonelli Editore and Disney Italia has established him as one of Italy’s leading contemporary comic writers. Together, Cavazzano and Nucci promise to offer a fresh adventure while remaining faithful to the spirit that has defined Lucky Luke for eight decades.

According to Sergio Bonelli Editore, the album is conceived as a fully Italian homage to Morris’ timeless creation, celebrating one of the greatest heroes in comic history.

A Highlight of Lucca Comics & Games 2026

The publication will debut during Lucca Comics & Games 2026, one of the world’s largest comics and pop culture festivals.

As part of the celebrations, Lucca will also host a major exhibition dedicated to Lucky Luke, featuring original artwork by Morris, historic covers, and rare material tracing the evolution of the beloved cowboy throughout his eighty-year history.

The exhibition and the new anniversary album together will form one of the festival’s headline attractions, emphasizing Lucky Luke’s lasting cultural significance within European comics.

A Celebration of European Comic Heritage

The new anniversary album is more than a commemorative publication. It represents a meeting of two great comic traditions: the Franco-Belgian heritage established by Morris and René Goscinny, and the Italian storytelling excellence represented by Giorgio Cavazzano and Marco Nucci.

At a time when classic comic characters continue to find new audiences, Lucky Luke’s 80th anniversary serves as a reminder of the timeless appeal of well-crafted storytelling, unforgettable characters, and visual humor that transcends generations.

Eight decades after riding into comic history, the lone cowboy is once again ready for a new adventure—proving that true legends never grow old.
