The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), North America’s largest and most prestigious animation event, has reached a historic milestone. To celebrate its 50th anniversary in September 2026, the festival has unveiled a commemorative poster designed by the legendary Canadian cartoonist and designer, Seth (Gregory Gallant).
The “Canadian Sensibility” of a Visual Icon
OIAF Artistic Director Chris Robinson sought an artist who could reflect a “distinctly Canadian sensibility and aesthetic” for this jubilee. Seth, whose retro-styled, emotive, and deeply original work has defined a generation of graphic novels, was the natural choice.
The 2026 poster introduces two whimsical characters: Owlbert, a scholarly owl surrounded by stacks of books, and Frogworth, a nerdish frog operating a vintage film projector. Together, they embody the festival’s unique blend of intellectual depth, creative curiosity, and offbeat humor.
A Full Circle Moment: From “Seth’s Dominion” to the 2026 Poster
Seth’s connection to the festival isn’t new. In 2014, the NFB documentary “Seth’s Dominion,” which explored his creative process and inner world, won the OIAF Grand Prize for Best Feature. His return to the festival as the official poster artist marks a beautiful full-circle moment for both the artist and the animation community.
Stillness vs. Movement: The Artist’s Perspective
In his artist’s statement, Seth offered a profound reflection on the relationship between his medium and animation:
“Graphic novelists and animators are related, but they come from very different branches of the cartooning family. My medium is all about stillness, and animation is all about movement… I have the deepest respect for the noble calling of animation in all its various forms.”
Why Seth Matters to Cartooning History
Seth is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the first graphic novelist ever nominated for the prestigious Giller Prize (for Clyde Fans). His work on The Complete Peanuts and his own serial Palookaville has set the gold standard for book design and visual storytelling.
The OIAF 2026 will take place from September 23-27. As the festival celebrates 50 years of championing animation as an art form, Seth’s poster serves as a reminder that every great animation begins with the power of a single, well-drawn line.
