The Menace is 75! Celebrating Beano’s Most Iconic Mischief Maker
Dennis the Menace is turning 75 this year, yet he’s still causing chaos at the ripe old age of 10!
The legendary British comic The Beano is celebrating this milestone with a star-studded special issue (No. 4328). This anniversary isn’t just about a birthday; it’s a tribute to the “Director of Mischief” who first appeared on March 17, 1951, drawn by the talented David Law.
Three Generations of Mischief
For those who haven’t kept up with the Beanotown lore: the Dennis we see today is actually the son of the 1980s Dennis, who in turn was the son of the 1951 original! It’s a family business of mischief that has spanned seven and a half decades.
A Star-Studded Celebration
To mark the 75th anniversary, Beano released a special issue featuring 75 of the world’s greatest “creative mischief makers,” as voted by UK children. From Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John to King Charles and Dua Lipa, these icons have been reimagined as their 10-year-old selves in an epic eight-page fold-out cover by artist Nigel Parkinson.
The Power of Creative Mischief
Research by Beano shows that mischief is more than just pranks—it’s about humor, creativity, and imagination. In a world that can feel a bit too serious, Dennis reminds us that “being a kid is the best thing ever.”
Interestingly, the British Dennis debuted the very same week as his American namesake in March 1951. Talk about a global coincidence for cartoon history!
