Jersey Artist Henry Bosdet’s Stained-Glass Legacy Showcased in Travelling Exhibition
A special exhibition celebrating the works of Jersey-born artist Henry Thomas Bosdet is set to conclude this weekend at St Aubin on the Hill. Showcasing Bosdet’s intricate stained-glass window designs, this travelling exhibition has previously been displayed at St Martin’s and St Mary’s churches, drawing art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
Honoring a Master of Stained Glass
Henry Thomas Bosdet trained at the prestigious Royal Academy for seven years before becoming an instructor there. Over his lifetime, he created breathtaking stained-glass windows not only in the UK and Jersey but also in the Netherlands, St Helena, and the legislative buildings of Barbados. His impact on Jersey’s artistic heritage remains profound, with his legacy preserved by the Glass Rainbow Trust and Jersey Heritage.
Restored Artworks on Display
A major highlight of the exhibition is the set of detailed paper drawings—known as cartoons—used in the creation of stained-glass windows. These sketches had been stored in archives since Bosdet’s passing in 1934 but were recently restored with funding from the Jersey Community Foundation.
Among the standout pieces is the Marriage at Cana stained-glass window at St Aubin on the Hill, regarded as one of Bosdet’s finest large-scale works. Visitors can view nine preparatory sketches from this masterpiece, including four towering 11-foot-high drawings and the original watercolour design approved by the Ecclesiastical Court.
A Reopening Celebration for St Aubin on the Hill
The exhibition also marks a significant milestone for St Aubin on the Hill, which is reopening its doors after extensive year-long roof renovations. The church now welcomes visitors to appreciate both its restored structure and the remarkable artworks within.
